Why did WWI settle into Trench Warfare?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Trench warfare is a type of land warfare using occupied fighting lines largely comprising military trenches, in which troops are well-protected from the enemy's small arms fire and are substantially sheltered from artillery. Trench warfare became archetypically associated with World War I (1914–1918), when the Race to the Sea rapidly expanded trench use on the Western Front starting in September 1914.

I hope this helped, have a good day!

Answer 2
trenches were used to try to protect soldiers from poison gas, giving them more time to put on gas masks and try and protect them more from other types of warfare

What is different about the classes in Aztecs society and those in the Mayan society?

Answers

Answer:

The Aztecs followed a strict social hierarchy in which individuals were identified as nobles (pipiltin), commoners (macehualtin), serfs, or slaves. The noble class consisted of government and military leaders, high level priests, and lords (tecuhtli). Priests had their own internal class system and were expected to be celibate and to refrain from alcohol. Failure to do so would result in serious punishment or death. The tecuhtli included landowners, judges, and military commanders. Nobles were entitled to receive tribute from commoners in the form of goods, services, and labor. Noble status was passed on through male and female lineages, and only nobles were permitted to display their wealth by wearing decorated capes and jewelry.

The commoner class consisted of farmers, artisans, merchants, and low-level priests. Artisans and traveling merchants enjoyed the greatest amount of wealth and prestige within this class, and had their own self-governing trade guilds. Commoners generally resided in calpulli (also referred to as calpolli), or neighborhood wards, which were led by a single nobleman and a council of commoner elders.

The Aztecs additionally had landless serfs and slaves.

Women had limited leadership roles within the Aztec empire.

Explanation:

Maya society was rigidly divided between nobles, commoners, serfs, and slaves. The noble class was complex and specialized. Noble status and the occupation in which a noble served were passed on through elite family lineages. Nobles served as rulers, government officials, tribute collectors, military leaders, high priests, local administrators, cacao plantation managers, and trade expedition leaders. Nobles were literate and wealthy, and typically lived in the central areas of Maya cities.

Commoners worked as farmers, laborers, and servants. It is believed that some commoners became quite wealthy through their work as artisans and merchants, and that upward mobility was allowed between classes through service in the military. Regardless, commoners were forbidden from wearing the clothes and symbols of nobility, and could not purchase or use luxury and exotic items. Commoners generally lived outside the central areas of towns and cities and worked individual and communal plots of land.

The Maya had a system of serfdom and slavery. Serfs typically worked lands that belonged to the ruler or local town leader. There was an active slave trade in the Maya region, and commoners and elites were both permitted to own slaves. Individuals were enslaved as a form of punishment for certain crimes and for failing to pay back their debts. Prisoners of war who were not sacrificed would become slaves, and impoverished individuals sometimes sold themselves or family members into slavery. Slavery status was not passed on to the children of slaves. However, unwanted orphan children became slaves and were sometimes sacrificed during religious rituals. Slaves were usually sacrificed when their owners died so that they could continue in their service after death. If a man married a slave woman, he became a slave of the woman's owner. This was was also the case for women who married male slaves.

Americans of Japanese descent:

A great injustice... pretty much all the answers, except deportation, are true.

Nisei, 2nd generation of Japanese descent, joined the US military to prove their allegiance. One regimental combat team, the 442, was the most decorated RCT in the war. “Go for Broke” was their motto.

It took almost 40 years before a mere 20,000 dollars was paid as reparations to the survivors.

Civil liberties act of 1988 offered a formal apology and approved the $20k reparations money.

Some families spent years finding their relatives as they were split up to various camps across western US.

Long term economic effects felt by many as their businesses were sold for back taxes, buildings confiscated etc. Most had to start over.

The Soviet Union pre-WWII
Joseph Stalin was born in Georgia, a country just south of Russia. He joined the Russian Bolshevik revolutionaries who were a group of people that followed communist ideals. Stalin led riots and strikes and raised money by robbing banks and committing other crimes. Soon Stalin became close to Vladimir Lenin (Soviet Russian Communist leader). In 1917, the Russian Revolution took place when the government led by the Tsars (royal family) was overthrown and the Bolsheviks came into power. Russia was now called the Soviet Union and Joseph Stalin was a major leader in government.

After Lenin's death, Stalin took over as the dictator of the Soviet Union. Stalin decided that the country should move away from agriculture and become industrialized. He had factories built through the country. The Soviet government controlled the economy and took over all farms, limiting the amount of food. Stalin would not supply food in some areas of the country to starve those that he no longer wanted to live. Stalin was responsible for the deaths of over 20 million of his own people! Stalin had secret police who spied on people. He had anyone that did not agree with him killed. Stalin put anyone who could be seen as an enemy in the gulags (prison camps) without a trial, where they faced hard labor and terrible conditions.
Stalin attempted to rewrite history books about himself, renamed cities in his name, put up numerous statues of himself, and had songs and art dedicated to him. Throughout his rule he ordered millions of people he thought were against him to be killed or put into slave labor camps. At the start of World War II, Stalin formed an alliance with Adolf Hitler and Germany. However, the Germans made a surprise attack on the Soviet Union in 1941. In order to fight off the Germans, Stalin joined the Allied countries. After World War II, Stalin set up governments in the Eastern European countries that the Soviet Union had "freed" from Germany. These governments were under control by the Soviet Union. This started the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.

Explanation:

President William McKinley asks Congress to declare war on Spain on April 20, 1898. In 1895, Cuba, located less than 100 miles south of the United States, attempted to overthrow Spanish colonial rule.

Answer: Roosevelt

Explanation: In terms of the Spanish American War, to Theodore Roosevelt war with Spain was inevitable, when the battleship Maine mysteriously exploded in Cuba’s Havana harbor in February 1898. Having been appointed to the post of Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897 by President William McKinley, Teddy had the chance to put his wartime military aspirations to good use when the Secretary of the Navy – John D. Long – stepped away from the office for several hours.

The battleship Maine, which was sent to protect the interests of the U.S. while Cuba revolted against Spain, suddenly exploded and sank, killing 3/4 of the crew on February 15, 1898. Although the cause of – and responsibility for – the explosion were undetermined, thanks to yellow-press articles printed by William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, Americans demanded action. In fact, the demand for action came with its own catchphrase: “Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!”

Because of Long’s absence, Roosevelt was the Acting Secretary of the Navy long enough to order the Navy to prepare for war, including ordering supplies, ammunition, experts, and the recruitment of an inexhaustible supply of sailors. On April 20, 1898, President McKinley signed a joint resolution ordering Spain to withdraw from Cuba. The following day, Spain cut all diplomatic ties with the U.S. and the U.S. Navy started blockading Cuba. On April 23, Spain declared war, and on April 25 Congress declared war had actually started April 21. Ironically, the same day Congress formally declared war, Roosevelt officially resigned from his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy and founded the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (called the “Rough Riders”).
